Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice (4th Edition)By Glen O. Gabbard, Gleno Gabbard

This new edition of the classic psychodynamic psychiatry text, Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, continues its tradition as the most readable, scholarly, and practical introduction to psychodynamic theory and practice available. Kept within arm's reach of all mental health professionals, this invaluable Aone-stopA reference will prepare you to teach students and treat patients more effectively with its truly integrative psychodynamic approach. The author has meticulously updated every chapter of the previous edition, adding new illustrative case examples and discussing the most recent research findings and concepts in psychodynamic psychiatry. It introduces the basic principles of psychodynamic psychiatry and the four fundamental theoretical frameworks derived from psychoanalytic theory: ego psychology, object relations theory, self psychology, and attachment theory. Drawing on the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience to validate the latest psychodynamic thinking, the author includes neuroanatomical illustrations that highlight the need to integrate psychoanalytic theories of development with brain development and the impact of environment on gene expression. The eminently practical Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is organized into three distinct sections based on DSM-IV diagnoses: -Section I, Basic Principles and Treatment Approaches in Dynamic Psychiatry, begins by laying a foundation in psychoanalytic theory. It focuses on how to apply psychoanalytic theory to specific types of evaluation and treatment, including psychodynamic assessment, brief therapy, individual and group psychotherapy, family and marital therapy, pharmacotherapy, and hospital/partial hospital treatment. -Section II, Dynamic Approaches to Axis I Disorders, covers the major psychiatric disorders and discusses how to apply psychodynamic understanding to the treatment of patients with these disorders. -Section III, Dynamic Approaches to Axis II Disorders, provides a psychodynamic understanding of personality disorders and covers in detail the principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy for these conditions. The fourth edition of Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice details the theory of psychodynamic psychotherapy and the adaptation of psychodynamic thinking to specific disorders. As such, it is an ideal companion to Dr. Gabbard's Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Basic Text, which details the techniques of dynamic psychotherapy. The bestselling Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is the definitive reference for training programs of all kinds at all levels. This new edition provides a clear synthesis of diagnostic understanding and treatment unmatched in the literature. Marked by Dr. Gabbard's distinctly lucid and compelling prose, it is the ultimate psychiatric guide for the busy clinician and mental health student.

Review "This new edition continues the trend towards integration of data from neuroscience research started in the last version. A burgeoning field of neuropsychoanalysis has sprung up in recent years, and the findings of neuroscientists and those who examine the interaction between genes and environment are confirming psychoanalytic views of development and the mechanisms of the mind. In this edition I have sought to weave those findings into the fabric of the first and second chapters that establish the basic principles and theoretical foundations of dynamic psychiatry. In so doing, I am once again asserting that psychodynamic psychiatrists must situate themselves firmly in a biopsychosocial context that recognizes the need to incorporate the findings of biological psychiatry into our theories about the human mind. Psychoanalytic theories of development, for example, can no longer stand apart from what we know about brain development and the impact of the environment on gene expression." - From the Preface"

The Dark Corner 1
It was Sally Wilcox who brought up how cool Bryce Poole was and started the argument that led to their taking another trip through the Secret Path. Of course she later swore she had nothing to do with what happened. It was typical. No one, especially Sally, ever wanted to be blamed for starting an adventure, at least not in the middle of the adventure—when it looked like they would all die.

The day started as so many did that summer in Springville, known as Spooksville to all the town kids. Adam Freeman, Cindy Makey, Sally Wilcox, and Watch were together for a breakfast of milk and doughnuts. While stuffing their faces at the local coffee shop, they tried to figure out what to do with the day.

“Only a few weeks and we’ll be back in school,” Sally said, brushing her brown bangs out of her eyes. “We have to make the most of every day.”

“I’m kind of looking forward to starting school here,” Cindy, who was new to town, said. “I like learning things.”

“Summer vacation in Spooksville is more of a learning experience than anything we do in school,” Sally muttered.

“What is school like here?” Adam, who was also new to town, asked. “Is it as weird as the rest of the town?”

“It’s pretty normal,” Watch said.

“Except for a few of the teachers,” Sally added. “The ones that aren’t human.”

“How did I know you were going to say that?” Cindy asked.

“There are a couple of unusual teachers in the middle school,” Watch admitted.

Sally nodded. “There’s Mr. Castro. He teaches history, basically. But sometimes he talks about the future.”

“Don’t say it,” Cindy interrupted, flipping her long blond hair over a shoulder. “Mr. Castro’s really from the future.”

“Well, he’s not from around here,” Watch said.

“I think he was built at the North Pole,” Sally said. “If my sources are accurate.”

“I heard it was the South Pole,” Watch said.

Adam and Cindy exchanged looks. “So he’s a robot?” Adam asked.

“He’s not a desktop computer,” Sally said.

Watch spoke reluctantly. “He does seem to have several machinelike qualities. For example, he never eats lunch. He never drinks water. When he’s tired, he lays out on the football field and soaks up the sun’s rays. I guess that’s how he recharges his batteries.”

“He also has a hearing aid that looks more like a cosmic receiver,” Sally said. “He never takes it off. I hear it’s wired directly into his positronic brain.” She added, “He sure doesn’t have trouble hearing.”

Cindy shook her head. “I don’t believe any of this.”

“Wait till you get him for history,” Sally said. “And he pops his eyes out in the middle of a lecture just to clean his contact lenses.”

“You said a couple of teachers were weird,” Adam said. “Who’s the other one?”

“Mrs. Fry,” Sally said. “She teaches biology. She’s a snake.”

“She has scaly skin?” Cindy asked.

“Yes,” Sally said impatiently. “I told you, she’s a snake. When have you ever seen a snake that didn’t have scaly skin?”

“What Sally means is Mrs. Fry seems to be part snake,” Watch said. “She slides around the room and hisses all the time. Some people think she’s a descendant of a reptilian race that lived here millions of years ago.”

“Frogs are dissected all the time in her class,” Sally said. “But never snakes or lizard. And all the frog parts—well, they disappear between classes. She eats them all.”

Cindy made a face. “That’s gross.”

“You haven’t seen gross until you’ve seen Mrs. Fry shed her skin,” Sally said.

Adam didn’t know what to make of any of this. “It sounds like it’s going to be an interesting school year.”

Sally brightened. “There are some cute guys at school.”

Cindy was cautious. “Are they human?”

Sally waved her hand. “There’s this one guy, his name’s Bryce Poole, and he’s so cool. He’s like a young James Bond. Nothing disturbs him. You’ll adore him, Cindy. He’s got real dark hair, and super warm brown eyes. He’s only twelve but he doesn’t act like a kid. He talks like a well-read, sophisticated adult—like me.”

Cindy was interested. “How come we haven’t seen him this summer?”

“He’s a loner,” Sally said in a confidential tone. “He takes his own risks and he doesn’t go whining to anyone about the consequences.”

“It’s hard to imagine anyone who’s taken more risks than we did this summer,” Adam muttered.

“And I can’t remember that we ever whined to anyone,” Watch added.

Sally stopped and laughed. “Are you guys jealous of Bryce?”

Adam shrugged. “How can I be jealous of someone I’ve never met?”

“I’ve met him and he’s no big deal,” Watch said.

“What bothers you guys more?” Sally persisted. “Is it his obvious intelligence? His smoldering good looks? Or is it his dynamic attitude?”

“I told you,” Adam said, “I’ve never met the guy. I know nothing about him.”

“I’m trying to tell you about him,” Sally said. “And you’re getting all upset.” She paused. “I think you’re jealous, but you don’t have to be. I like him as a friend. There’s nothing between us.”

“I bet he’s wonderful,” Cindy gushed.

“How can you say that?” Adam, who was a little insecure about his looks and especially about his height, demanded. “You haven’t met him either.”

“But if Cindy does fall in love with him when she meets him,” Sally said, “you mustn’t stand in her way, Adam. You have to be mature about it. So Bryce is better-looking, taller, and smarter than you and Watch. It doesn’t mean you’re not worthy human beings.”

“Oh brother,” Adam muttered.

“Where’s a good place to meet him?” Cindy asked.

Sally spoke seriously. “You have to catch him coming or going. He never stays in one place long. He’s always taking some super risk to protect this town from danger.”

“Hold on a second,” Adam said. “Since I’ve been here, what has he done to protect this town? I mean, where was he when we had to deal with aliens, the Haunted Cave, the Cold People, not to mention the witch. Where was he all this time?”

“Yeah,” Watch agreed. “Bryce didn’t even bother to help us out with the Howling Ghost.”

Sally smiled condescendingly. “Bryce doesn’t deal with small crises. He only handles major ones.”

“How can you call the Cold People a small crisis?” Adam demanded. “If we hadn’t stopped them, they would have taken over the whole planet.”

“Yes, but this isn’t that big a planet,” Sally said. “Not compared to the rest of the galaxy. Bryce deals more with cosmic emergencies.”

“I thought you said he protected the town,” Adam interrupted.

“And many other places,” Sally said.

Adam and Watch looked at each other and rolled their eyes. “Like what kind of cosmic emergencies?” Adam tried again. “What is this big shot Bryce doing right now to protect us?”

Sally glanced around the coffee shop to make sure no one was listening. She spoke in a hushed tone. “Bryce is working with the Secret Path. He’s trying to halt the interdimensional flow of negativity so that it doesn’t seep into our reality.”

Adam frowned. “How do you know this?”

Sally sat back and nodded gravely. “I have my sources.”

“I don’t believe it,” Watch said. “Bryce Poole doesn’t even know what the Secret Path is. I asked him about it once and he didn’t even know where it began.”

“He was just acting like he didn’t know,” Sally said. “After I told him about our adventures on the other side of it, he told me he didn’t think you were equipped enough to survive the dangers of the interdimensional portal.”

It was Watch’s turn to frown. “Equipped with what?”

“I don’t want to get personal here,” Sally said.

“You are always personal,” Adam said dryly.

Sally was offended. “Don’t take it out on me because Cindy is suddenly interested in another guy.”

“I didn’t say I was interested,” Cindy said.

“Your voice said it all,” Sally corrected. “And I understand what Adam’s going through. I’m sympathetic. To experience raging jealously and bitter rejection for the first time is not easy.”

Adam sighed. “I am so grateful for your sympathy.”

“We’re arguing about nothing,” Watch said. “Bryce isn’t a super hero. He’s probably not ever used the Secret Path.”

“How do you know?” Sally shot back. “You’ve been afraid to use it since that first time.”

“I haven’t been afraid,” Watch said. “I’ve just been busy with other things.”

“Yeah, like saving the planet with me, his best friend,” Adam added.

“I saved the planet, too,” Sally said.

“Then you and Bryce should be perfect together,” Adam said.

Sally laughed. “You are so jealous!”

Adam got angry. “Why should I be jealous of a guy who thinks he’s James Bond? I agree with Watch. This guy has not been on the Secret Path. He doesn’t have the guts.”

Sally stood. “Why don’t we go see?”

“Go where?” Cindy asked. “See what? What is the Secret Path?”

“It winds through town and leads to other dimensions,” Watch explained.

“It starts or ends in the cemetery,” Sally added. “Depending on how you look at it. Why don’t we go there and look for signs of Bryce? Then we can see who the real hero in this town is.”

“Why would Bryce leave signs that he’s been using the Secret Path?” Watch asked.

“Yeah,” Adam said. “Who is he trying to impress?”

“You guys have an answer for everything.” Sally snickered and turned for the door. “Are you chickens coming or not?”

The way she worded the question, it was impossible to say no.

I love to color for relaxation and stress relief. Coloring, for me, is one of the best ways to wind down after a long stressful day. This book has some amazing pictures to color. The best thing is that because it is on Kindle, I can print out the one page that I want to color and don't have to remove the pictures from the book making it less stable. Thank you Jade Summer for a great product!Disclosure ~ I received this product for free or with a promotional discount for my honest review and have not received any monetary compensation to give a good review. The opinions herein are my own. Please note… your own opinion may vary. I do my best to give honest reviews to include facts that a prospective purchaser may find beneficial.

I received this adult coloring book in a digital PDF format so that I could print only the pages that I wanted from my home printer and on my paper of choice. With that being said, I can not speak to the physical quality of the book itself (such as the binding, paper quality, etc). However, in reading the description of the physical book it is all the same designs but there are 2 copies of each design in the physical book whereas my digital copy only had 1 copy of each design. Some of the animals have a very "realistic" design style (such as the fish I colored and attached in the pictures below) but some of the animals are more cartoon styled. (I believe this is the trend with the mandala design). To my disappointment, the animals are not full page designs and in general lack any type of surrounding designs (trees, sky, patterns, etc) which results in large quantities of white space around the outside of the animals. The fish that I chose to color would be about the average size of the drawings but some were much smaller (like the deer with antlers image I attached below). I was also saddened to find that the lion design from the cover is not actually one of the animals in the book. Another item worth noting is that 4 of the animals come in the book with colored eyes (browns and oranges).Overall, fairly simple designs that are better for someone not looking to get overly tedious or wanting to spend all day on one image. This book would be great for starters or older children that are bored with the children's coloring books.I was offered this product at a discounted rate for my honest review.

I wouldn't really consider the animals in this book to neccessarily be "mandala" animals. If you are looking for animals drawn into circles, or any type of mandala circles, this is not the book for you. However, with that being said, this book is easily one of my favorite animal coloring books (and I have quite a few). The pictures in this book are so clear and they fill a lot of the page. I love just having the animal picture to color and not a huge background full of stuff to mess with. The pictures almost look like an animal "selfie" or a "face shot" for a job. LOL. The details on each animal are fun and unique through the book, each animal has a different type of feature detail. Most pictures have a nice mix of small details and slightly larger spaces to color. This book has duplicate pictures, so every picture in the book has a double, which is cool because if you mess up (I do, a lot) you get a re-try! The pages are single sided on a reasonable thickness paper (not computer paper but also not card stock) and the backsides of the pages are black. Overall this is a really great book!I received this item at a discounted price in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Purchased this book for my wife who loves coloring. So far this coloring book has been great. I was perusing a site and stumbled upon it, and figured it would be fun for her to color. The book is average size i'd say with a good number of pages to interact with. Paper is thick and higher quality. No repeating pages that I saw, as it should be, which is always refreshing. The book size is about the standard size of 8 x 11, not a tiny book to carry in a purse or handbag. It would fit great in a backpack or sleeve. The pictures have a lot of detail and the ink is pretty light between coloring areas. There were a few pages that did have heavy ink, I wasn't a huge fan of that but overall hasn't impacted my rating. We purchased he physical book, not the ebook. One great thing is that the animals have a pretty realistic design, looking a lot like the actual animals with some obvious coloring enhanced areas. Some are not as realistic but the overall designs are far better than others we've seen. The backs of the actual pages are blacked out so that your colors don't bleed through the pages. My wife has always loved to color, it relaxes her and helps her find peace. Terry Pratchett was brilliant and the master of a fantasy sub-genre that probably belongs to him alone. Mort is a novel set in Discworld. The Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. Each book focuses on one of them, although they cross over and pop up in each others' books all the time. It is best if you start from the beginning of a particular grouping and work your way through, otherwise you'll miss a lot of inside jokes, references, etc. There are charts on the internet that will show you the groupings. You can trust Terry Pratchett to not be too linear and to not be very predictable. Mort is an early novel of Death. Mort is a bumbling young adolescent of no particular talent when his father takes him to the job fair to find an apprenticeship. Just at the stroke of midnight, Death arrives to offer Mort the apprenticeship. Death lives with his man servant, his daughter, and Binky, an immensely powerful horse, at a compound of his own creation. Like all of the Discworld books, the tone is satirical and clever. This book did not make me laugh out loud like Wee Free Men, but it was amusing. Ankh Mopork is much the same (a city impossible to describe here). Mort is sincere but naïve. Death is suffering from burnout and mayhem ensues. Somehow, Terry Pratchett makes all the nonsense work. These books do not contain any scenes, language, or images that would rate even a PG-13 rating at the movies. If a reader does not have sufficient maturity, much of the book will be wasted, because you won’t get the jokes or understand the satire. I count myself lucky to still have so many novels of Discworld ahead of me.

Mort is an awkward young man. He’s not really good at anything. His dad isn’t even sure what to do with him. So he takes young Mort to a job fair in town with the hopes of passing him off to someone else. No one seems interested in choosing Mort as an apprentice until just before midnight. Someone on a white horse and wearing a black cape comes up and offers Mort a job. Mort’s father believes the position is for an undertaker; but in reality the anthropomorphic personification of “Death” himself offers young Mort a position as his apprentice. Thus begins a pretty darn funny adventure as Mort does his best (and continually fails) to learn to be “death”.I believe this is book four in Terry Pratchett’s “Diskworld” series. It was recommended to me by a friend and he assured me that I didn’t need to read the previous three books to be able to read this one. He was right. While it’s my understanding that “death” makes appearances in some of the other books, I was perfectly able to follow along in this one without any prior introduction to the series. The book is silly – downright ridiculous at times, but is genuinely funny. There are almost laugh out loud moments in the book and Pratchett does a good job of painting a Mort character that all of us can relate to at different points in our lives. The humor and style of the book is not something that I would probably choose to read all of the time, but served as a great “pallet cleanser” between more serious novels. I certainly did enjoy the story and wouldn’t hesitate to read Pratchett again when I’m in the mood for a good laugh. Well done.

Pratchett is one of the greatest writers of our time, maybe all time. Discworld is one of the most amazing, vibrant, and spellbinding fantasy worlds ever conceived. Each book adds another piece to the rich fabric of this imaginary landscape, yet they can be enjoyed in any order. I find my favorite characters to be the ones occupying whatever Pratchett book I'm reading at the moment. There is humor and purpose dripping from every line of text that graces a Pratchett novel. Not a single word is wasted, nor abused. His spirit lives on in each fantastic journey through the Discworld. May he rest in peace. There is no need to review this book alone. If you're looking for a cookie cutter fantasy novel, Terry Pratchett is not for you. If, however, you seek a more profound experience from your literature than no single book by Terry Pratchett will ever be enough. I have read these books many times over.

Every year since our twins with tiny we would wrap picture books and put them under the tree on Dec. 1 and they would unwrap one each night until Christmas Eve and we would read it before bed. A tradition they looked forward to each year. They are getting older now and the picture books are not as exciting, so we have adopted a new tradition in the same vein. We love the love create from this book. It's a bit cheesy, Death is one of our favorite characters and Pratchett is simply a priceless author. So, when I came across this beautiful copy of the book I immediately knew what our new tradition would be. Starting this year we start reading the Hogfather each night as our countdown to Christmas, then watch the movie on Christmas Eve. We love it. This copy is unique, beautiful, and will be treasured.
